What the quiz actually measures
Three things: the register you are drawn to, the scale you are comfortable living with, and how much representation you want left on the canvas. Those three sort cleanly across the five movements we survey. What the quiz cannot do is stand in for looking — taste sharpens in rooms with paintings in them, not in questionnaires.
Figurative work and abstraction, separated
Figurative painting keeps the recognisable body or object on the surface. Abstraction strips that reference back, or drops it entirely, so colour, line and composition carry the picture on their own. Most contemporary painting of any interest sits somewhere along the run between the two rather than at either end of it.
Why the same movement is priced differently by region
Price tracks the market a painting sits in, not only the painting. A canvas of comparable ambition and finish can carry one figure in Moscow or Tbilisi and a multiple of it once a Western gallery, an art fair and a currency conversion sit between the painter and the wall the work ends up on. That spread is the whole reason the market surveys on this site exist.
